Tell us about yourself ! Are you a half person?
是的,我出生在东京,是法国与日本的混血儿。童年时期我也曾在南美洲和东南亚地区生活过。我目前在Keytales工作室担任创意主管的工作。
Yes, I am half French, half Japanese. I was born in Tokyo and had the chance to live in South America and South East Asia during my childhood. Currently I am Creative Director at Keytales.
——请Nakayama先生介绍一下你的艺术学习经历吧!是怎样的契机让你走上了创作之路呢?Could you please tell us about your art learning experience? What was the opportunity that led you to be an artist?
实际上,我没有去过任何美术相关学校,在这方面我基本上完全是自学的。契机是我学习在线辅导课程时遇到了现在已经是合作过很多项目的工作室同事Emanuel Shiu(伊曼纽尔·肖)。起初在我自学的那几年很困难,一开始我的作品完全没有反响……直到我发现网络上有很多学习Blender和Photoshop等创作软件的资源,这些内容给我提供了相当大的帮助,让我逐渐达成了自己的创作目标。
I actually haven't been to any school and am mostly self-taught in that regard. But I have had the chance to do online mentorships, where I've met Emanuel Shiu whom I currently work with at Keytales on various projects. The self-learning years were definitely difficult. There was no feedback for my artwork at first, but eventually I found that there are quite a lot of resources online to learn software such as Blender and Photoshop and that really helped to get me where I wanted to be.
——在你的作品中可以看到很多昭和年代日本的动画以及文化元素, 类似魔神铁金刚Z还有阿童木这些老作品,这是和你的成长经历有关吗?
We can see a lot of showa era Japanese animation and cultural elements in your work. They are somewhat similar to old works such as Mazinger Z and Astro Boy. Is it related to your upbringing?

Yeah. These were actually inspirations from my time growing up with shows from my father's childhood. He always held onto cassettes from old 60s and 70s TV shows, so later I got to watch them during my own childhood in the 90s. Naturally then, when I was looking to show Japan during a different era, I felt like that period was way more interesting. It really exhibits, in my opinion, the evolution and modernization of the country at the time and it was important to me show it from that other angle. I guess, because I think there's already a lot of popular shows that depict Japan during the 90s and the 21st century.

There are many scenes from different countries in your works, and they look cinematic. Have you actually been to these places? Please share with us if you have great experience about this.
我曾有幸旅游去很多不同的国家,并且我也非常喜欢历史、地理、文化、文学、摄影、当然还有电影。所以我会自然倾向于在我的作品中描绘不同的文化。我觉得人类的多样性是一些非常独特且值得深入探索的东西。
I've had the chance to travel to a lot of different countries across most continents and I've always been a fan of topics related to history, geography, culture, literature, photography and, of course, cinema, so my natural choices tend to go towards depicting different cultures in my work. I feel like the diversity in mankind is something very unique and worth exploring.

Would you mind tell us the business projects that you have participated in?We are also curious about your original work.

I'm actually preparing a couple of posts to show in the near future about the things I've been doing for various client work, so you might have something to look forward to there.

You seem to like the SF theme very much. Can you introduce your favorite movies and animations for us? How do you define them?
我不想说我并不是特别喜欢科幻小说这个事实。虽然我喜欢很多从90年代开始上映的日本动画,但主要是出于怀旧的原因。
如果要我列举一些欣赏的电影制片人名字和我最喜欢的作品,这当然有手塚治虫的《大都会Metropolis》,今敏的《东京教父》,宫崎骏和他的吉卜力工作室的电影作品,尤其是《风之谷》和《幽灵公主》。再有安德烈·塔可夫斯基的所有电影,其中《潜行者》是我的最喜欢的。当然还有斯坦利·库布里克和雷德利·斯科特的早期电影等等,这里特别要提到简坎皮恩的《钢琴》,它是一部绝对令人惊叹的电影。

I'm not particularly a Sci-Fi fan, I wouldn't say. Although I do like Japanese animation from the 90s a lot, though mostly for nostalgic reasons.
To name some filmmaker's I love and my favorite works of theirs, there's of course Metropolis by Osamu Tezuka, Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon, Hayao Miyazaki and his work on movies by Studio Ghibli, particularly Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke. All of Andrei Tarkovsky's films of which Stalker is my favorite. And also Stanley Kubrick, of course, and Ridley Scott's early movies. Special mention to The Piano by Jane Campion, an absolutely stunning movie.
What I would also say is that a big part of what defines my work is the relationship between music and that work. Some artists I'd like to mention are Klaus Schulze, Pete Namlook and Philip Glass. I also love to attend experimental music exhibitions where I can learn about what's currently happening and being innovated on in the music industry.

How do you plan your future creative direction? What kind of business project you might find it interesting?

For right now, I want to further develop the studio I have and create more original projects and stories. I'm actually super grateful to already have a team in which all of our talents are combined. These include graphic design, writing, motion graphics, animation, storytelling and cinematic image making, that all come together. I believe the natural step forward for us will be to actually delve more into film making, which is why I spend a lot of time developing my own stories. Hopefully that's something I'll be able to share with you soon.
——请Nakayama先生你谈谈对“商业与艺术的结合”的观点?你觉得怎么样的结合会是理想的表现形式呢?
What is your opinion on the combination of commerce and art? What kind of combination do you think would be the ideal expression?
我认为对我来说,在创造性的方面我找到了合适的位置,在那里能够为我的客户提供我视角中的更广阔的视野范围。通常从我帮助他们发展叙事开始,例如故事设计和角色,因为我们在那之后还负责视觉效果,所以相当于我们在自己制定的规则内进行一切。这感觉太棒了,这也是为什么我对自己目前所做的事超级热情洋溢。
I think for me, creatively, I found the right spot, where I'm able to provide to clients my vision on a bigger scale. It usually starts with me helping them develop the narrative, story design and the characters and because we then set the visuals, we actually play within our own rules. It's something amazing to have and why I'm super passionate about what I currently do.
